Teaching Challenge: Voodoo Economics

Connectivity: Collaboration and cooperation make learning fun

After looking at this video for three consecutive reruns, and laughing so hard that my sides are still hurting, I had a sober thought. What could be done to change this video into a positive example of teaching (and learning)?

Well, before this economics class began, I would have had the students to interview people (family members perhaps) who could give an oral history on the event in question.

In class, the students would have presented their interview results to each other, in a Speaking Pyramid / Fluid Pairs type of activity.

Next, the students could have role-played a meeting of the President and his economic advisers, discussing the pros and cons of various options, trying to establish a course of action for the nation’s economic policy.

As a final exercise, the students could have chosen to write a report for an absent class member, or a letter to the editor describing the course of action they had chosen to follow in their “meeting”, or to survey actual businesspeople (10 to 20), to find out how their economic policies would have been received in the business world.

How’s that? That’s my class on Voodoo Economics. What would you have done? By the way, feel free to critique my class. In fact, I would be grateful if you, dear reader, pointed out to me the weaknesses (and strengths?) of my plan.
