Results from the 2012 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme examination session were issued today with over 119,000 students across the world receiving their diplomas or course results, an increase of over 8,000 from 2011.
On average, Diploma students scored 29.83 with 109 achieving the maximum score of 45 points.

Carolyn Adams, Chief Assessment Officer at the International Baccalaureate adds: “We are very pleased with the exam results that have been achieved across the globe. We believe it is essential that students, teachers and universities have confidence in a robust qualification, which offers an internationally benchmarked standard against which to judge success.”
Pass rates for 2012 are 78.16%, and have remained stable over the past five years:

An official spokesperson for the International Baccalaureate said: “The results are a testament to the hard work put in by IB students and teachers globally. The IB Diploma Programme provides students with a unique set of skills, attitudes and perspectives for success in an increasingly integrated world, and I have every confidence that this current cohort will go on to enjoy every success in the future.”
The preparation of exam papers and mark schemes begins at least 18 months before the examinations. The session reaches its climax in June with in the region of 162 grade award meetings, each one led by a Chief Examiner. Approximately 418 examiners attend the grade award meetings to establish grade boundaries in each subject, enabling the IB to issue accurate results.
About the IB Diploma Programme
Students study six subjects: five chosen from five groups (literature in the student’s native language, a foreign language, a science, mathematics, a humanity or social science) in addition to an art or another choice from groups 1-5.
In addition to these subjects, all students complete three core requirements that are included to challenge and to broaden the educational experience:
The extended essay (4,000 words) which requires independent research related to a subject of their choice
Theory of knowledge that encompasses 1) critically examining different ways of knowing – perception, emotion, language and reason and 2) examining the different kinds of knowledge – scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical
Creativity, action, service (CAS) that requires students to engage in 1) arts activities and demonstrating creativity, 2) taking action by participating in sports (team and individual), local and international projects and expeditions and 3) participating in community and social service activities. Students are expected to be involved in CAS activities for the equivalent of at least three hours each week during the two years of the programme.
Thomas Baker is the Past-President of TESOL Chile (2010-2011). He is the Head of the English Department at Colegio Internacional SEK in Santiago, Chile.
He is the Co-Founder and Co-Organiser of EdCamp Santiago, free, participant-driven, democratic, conversation based professional development for teachers, by teachers. EdCamp Santiago 2012 was held at Universidad Mayor in Santiago.
Thomas is also a member of the Advisory Board for the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HETL), where he also serves as a reviewer and as the HETL Ambassador for Chile.
Thomas enjoys writing about a wide variety of topics. Thus far, he has written the following genres: romance, historical fiction, autobiographical, sports history/biography, and English Language Teaching. He has published a total of forty three (43) books overall.
The source and inspiration for his writing comes from his family, his wife Gabriela, and his son, Thomas Jerome Baker, Jr.

It is my authorial belief that any education that does not unite the nations of the world in a common endeavour is a relic of the past century. A common sense of sharing the responsibility, equally, for the welfare of the planet, globally, is needed more than ever today.
Finally, I can only say one thing: The IB program is a positive way forward for any education system in crisis, any education system that desires quality, any education system that aspires to excellence, any education system that wishes to educate its citizens in the image of the twenty-first century, rather than the past century…
