International Baccalaureate – Coleg LLandrillo 100% Success!

July 12, 2012

International Baccalaureate students at Coleg Llandrillo have been celebrating after achieving outstanding grades which are significantly higher than the world average pass rate. In the results announced this week, 100% of students achieved the full International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The 100% pass rate achieved by Coleg Llandrillo students massively outstrips this year’s world average pass rate of 78.1% and the excellent results mean that most students are able to go to their first choice of university.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged 16 to 19.

It is based around detailed academic study of a wide range of subjects, including languages, the arts, science, maths, history and geography. Depending on the individual score achieved, the IB Diploma can be the equivalent of six A Levels at grade ‘A’.

Alex Tattum from Betws-y-Coed is off to study International Relations at York University. Alex said: “I am very happy and relieved that I have got a place at my university of choice. I really enjoyed the course; it could be a little intensive at times, but ultimately, it was very rewarding. Hopefully after my degree studies, I would like a career in international politics or journalism.”

Josh Nelson from Rhos-on-Sea will be going to Bangor University in the autumn to study for a degree in Law with French. “I am so excited that I got into Bangor University”, said Josh. “I have made some great friends in my two years at Llandrillo. Hopefully, I will have a career as a Barrister.”

Katie Burrows from Penrhyn Bay, who has yet to finalise her destination of choice, will be going to either Lancaster University or Nottingham University to study Biomedical Science or Microbiology. Katie said: “It has been hard work, but an enjoyable experience. I have met some great people, both students and staff, and I am excited about my future.

Natalie Coutts from Prestatyn will be moving north, as she has secured a place at Edinburgh University to study for a degree in Applied Sport Science. Natalie said: “I am overjoyed and totally relieved. I have had a great time on the IB and the tutors have been so supportive.” Natalie hopes to be a Personal Trainer after her studies at university.

Neha Isaac from Prestatyn has yet to decide between Cardiff and Nottingham universities, where she will be studying for a Psychology degree. Neha said: “It has been a very rewarding two years. I am so surprised at my result, as a part of me thought that I would never pass. It was nice to have my friend Natalie on the course, as we have been close friends since primary school.”

Jackie Doodson, Principal, Coleg Llandrillo – Welcome to Coleg Llandrillo. At our campuses across Conwy and Denbighshire, we offer an extensive choice of courses, including A Levels, the prestigious International Baccalaureate and numerous vocational courses ranging from Art to Wood Occupations. We also offer vocational degrees and are one of the largest providers of Foundation degrees in Wales.
Each year, we achieve excellent results with 100% pass rates on many courses. Numerous students regularly win regional and national awards, exceeding their expectations and inspiring them to aim for new heights.
An extensive programme of expansion and refurbishment over recent years means that we now have some of the best teaching and learning facilities in the country.
I look forward to welcoming you to Coleg Llandrillo.

Course co-ordinator, Zoe Meakins, said: “The College has been offering the IB as an alternative to A Levels for over 20 years and I am delighted that we have had yet another year of outstanding results. The students have again done us proud. In an increasingly competitive world, universities look very favourably on the IB qualification, and these students are excellent examples of the confident, articulate and conscientious young people that flourish on this course.

“The IB provides a broad education and develops personal skills which are invaluable for university studies.

Recent students have gained places at some of the top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, York, Imperial College, Royal Veterinary College, Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Edinburgh.”

The IB Diploma Programme ensures students do not narrow their course of study too early and prepares them well for higher education and the world of work.

Evidence suggests that as a result, IB students perform better at university; figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that a higher percentage of IB students achieve a first class honours award compared to students holding A Levels or equivalent qualifications (19% as opposed to 14.5%), and that drop-out rates are lower amongst IB students.

Adrian Kearney, Regional Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa, International Baccalaureate, welcomed today’s results, saying:

“We want to congratulate the students at Coleg Llandrillo on their results. Those who have achieved their IB Diploma today should feel confident that they are already a step ahead and uniquely placed to excel at university and beyond.”

The International Baccalaureate [Kindle Edition]

The International Baccalaureate [Paperback]

The global search for high-quality education, embedded in high-performing education systems, has taken on mythical proportions, almost resembling the alchemists’ quest to turn common metals into gold.

It is my hope that the present day search for global education, equitable and providing equality of opportunity for all, shall not cease until the “gold” we seek, has been found.

I therefore dedicate this book to all the educators, researchers, parents and students the world over, who strive to achieve this elusive goal,high-quality education for all the citizens of the world.

In this endeavour, it is my belief that the International Baccalaureate merits a closer look, based on their more than 40 year history of delivering consistently excellent results.

I add that all of the reflections and views in this book are mine alone, unless otherwise noted, and can not be attributed to my employer or any other organization I am affiliated with, past or present. For any errors or oversights, I bear the complete responsibility.
