International Baccalaureate – Coleg LLandrillo 100% Success!

International Baccalaureate students at Coleg Llandrillo have been celebrating after achieving outstanding grades which are significantly higher than the world average pass rate. In the results announced this week, 100% of students achieved the full International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The 100% pass rate achieved by Coleg Llandrillo students massively outstrips this year’s world average pass rate of 78.1% and the excellent results mean that most students are able to go to their first choice of university.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged 16 to 19.
It is based around detailed academic study of a wide range of subjects, including languages, the arts, science, maths, history and geography. Depending on the individual score achieved, the IB Diploma can be the equivalent of six A Levels at grade ‘A’.
Alex Tattum from Betws-y-Coed is off to study International Relations at York University. Alex said: “I am very happy and relieved that I have got a place at my university of choice. I really enjoyed the course; it could be a little intensive at times, but ultimately, it was very rewarding. Hopefully after my degree studies, I would like a career in international politics or journalism.”
Josh Nelson from Rhos-on-Sea will be going to Bangor University in the autumn to study for a degree in Law with French. “I am so excited that I got into Bangor University”, said Josh. “I have made some great friends in my two years at Llandrillo. Hopefully, I will have a career as a Barrister.”
Katie Burrows from Penrhyn Bay, who has yet to finalise her destination of choice, will be going to either Lancaster University or Nottingham University to study Biomedical Science or Microbiology. Katie said: “It has been hard work, but an enjoyable experience. I have met some great people, both students and staff, and I am excited about my future.
Natalie Coutts from Prestatyn will be moving north, as she has secured a place at Edinburgh University to study for a degree in Applied Sport Science. Natalie said: “I am overjoyed and totally relieved. I have had a great time on the IB and the tutors have been so supportive.” Natalie hopes to be a Personal Trainer after her studies at university.
Neha Isaac from Prestatyn has yet to decide between Cardiff and Nottingham universities, where she will be studying for a Psychology degree. Neha said: “It has been a very rewarding two years. I am so surprised at my result, as a part of me thought that I would never pass. It was nice to have my friend Natalie on the course, as we have been close friends since primary school.”

The IB Diploma Programme ensures students do not narrow their course of study too early and prepares them well for higher education and the world of work.
Evidence suggests that as a result, IB students perform better at university; figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that a higher percentage of IB students achieve a first class honours award compared to students holding A Levels or equivalent qualifications (19% as opposed to 14.5%), and that drop-out rates are lower amongst IB students.

Thomas Baker is the Past-President of TESOL Chile (2010-2011). He is the Head of the English Department at Colegio Internacional SEK in Santiago, Chile.
He is the Co-Founder and Co-Organiser of EdCamp Santiago, free, participant-driven, democratic, conversation based professional development for teachers, by teachers. EdCamp Santiago 2012 was held at Universidad Mayor in Santiago.
