Carolina Schmidt Zaldivar: Chile’s new Minister of Education

Commercial Engineer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She developed a successful career in the private sector, being general manager and director of several companies. She began her career in the retail group FORUS SA in Chile and then later worked in England and Italy.

Between 1995 and 1996 she studied Marketing and Communications at New York University and worked at the Nine West Group.

She returned to Chile as General Manager of Nine West Chile in charge of business expansion to Latin America.

In 2000 Carolina assumed the general management of the magazine Capital and developed a successful career in the mass media.

She was named Director of Vine Tabalí of the Holding Quiņenco. In 2008, she became General Manager of CCU Foods, where she was responsible for the development of the company’s mass consumer food snack business for the Luksic group.
 
In the social field, she was named Director of Infocap, Representative of Endeavor for the promotion of entrepreneurship, Representative of Community Women and the Center for Women’s Business Research, ECMS.

She was named by former President Bachelet to join the presidential advisory council for the development of public policies for children and women’s work, which gave birth to the “Chile Grows With You” program.

She has been recognized for nine years with the award “100 Women Leaders of Chile”, by the newspaper, El Mercurio.
 
From March 2010 until April 2013 she served as Minister of National Women’s Service. In this ministry, SERNAM, she has given impulse to important public policies in favor of the rights and opportunities of women, sucha as: postnatal extension of 3-6 months, the promulgation of the Law of Femicide, the fight against domestic violence, increased female labor participation & integration, and leadership of women in all areas of public life of the country.
